ICS Welcomes Expanded Parole in Place

ICS welcomes the announcement of an expanded Parole in Place (PIP) program, which could provide legal status for approximately 550,000 undocumented immigrants across the United States and 8,000 in Oregon alone.

On June 18, 2024, the U.S. Government enacted an executive order announcing that undocumented spouses and children of U.S. citizens who have lived in the country for at least 10 years will be eligible to apply for PIP. The immigration benefit allows someone who has already entered the United States without lawful authorization to remain in the country temporarily, as well as claim a work permit, a green card, and eventually, U.S. citizenship.

The executive order has highlighted the following eligibility criteria that undocumented immigrants must meet:

·       Have been continuously present in the United States without admission or parole for at least 10 years as of June 17, 2024;

·       Have a legally valid marriage to a U.S. citizen as of June 17, 2024;

·       Not pose a threat to public safety or national security;

·       Have no disqualifying criminal history; and

·       Be eligible to apply for adjustment of status.

The application process will open on August 19, 2024, and ICS is dedicated to sharing updated information on this opportunity and helping our clients navigate this system. It is important to note that the U.S. Government will reject any application filed before the application period begins. Please use caution when selecting a legal service provider and beware of individuals promising to file these applications before the application period begins.

While we celebrate this important reform, ICS continues to urge the U.S. Congress to provide a permanent legislative solution and pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants whose legal status remains in limbo.
