Supporting Survivors and Families in I-5 Tragedy

As a member of PODER Oregon, Immigration Counseling Service (ICS) is joining the Oregon Farm Bureau and Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN) to support farmworker families affected by last week’s I-5 tragedy. On Thursday, May 18th, seven of our fellow farmworkers had their lives tragically cut short on the I-5 highway due to a reckless act. Four others were injured that day, their lives forever altered by this devastating event. Each one of these individuals worked tirelessly, day in and day out, not only for their families back in Mexico but also contributing greatly to our community here in Oregon.ICS and PODER would like to offer its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those we have lost. As we mourn Eduardo Lopez, Alejandro Jimenez Hernandez, Josue Garcia Garcia, Luis Enrique Gomez Reyes, Javier Suarez, Alejandra Espinoza Carpio, and Juan Carlos Leyva Carrillo, a collective desire to extend support has led to united action among Latino organizations and partners. PCUN, Oregon Farm Bureau, PODER, and other groups have come together to create a fund for the families affected."100 percent of the proceeds will go to the surviving workers and the families of those impacted," assures Reyna Lopez, Executive Director of PCUN.As part of PODER’s network effort, OYEN Emotional Wellness Center is providing emotional support services to those affected.
