What Migrant Busing Says About How We Treat Immigrants

In a move intended to sow fear and create chaos, Florida and Texas have bused more than 8,000 immigrants out of state in recent months. ICS unequivocally denounces these actions as needlessly cruel political stunts.Governor Greg Abbott of Texas initiated migrant busing in April by transferring immigrants to Washington, D.C., then to New York. More recently, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida flew immigrants to the indigenous Wampanoag island of Noepe, also known as Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.According to the immigrants who have experienced busing and the advocates who are helping them, authorities in Florida and Texas deliberately misinformed them about where they were going, why, and what services they would receive. Florida and Texas made no efforts to inform community organizations, which were blindsided by scores of immigrants suddenly needing support.Rather than showing an ounce of empathy for the vulnerability of these immigrants and refugees, Florida and Texas have transparently and callously used them as political pawns. Sending groups of people across the country while navigating their asylum claims has created a legal nightmare, especially in rural areas where services are limited. These actions have underscored the importance of delivering immigration legal assistance outside of urban areas, where federal immigration infrastructure is usually located.However, there is also a story of community support that deserves attention. In the face of the dehumanizing actions by Florida and Texas, local communities that received immigrants have rallied to provide immediate food, legal assistance, and shelter. They have shown that immigrants are valued members of our country, deserving of care and respect.
